Things You Should Know Before Going to the Pool for the First Time

What do you need to take with you to the pool?

To begin with, you need to pack your swimming bag:

  • Swimsuit
  • Swim cap
  • Goggles
  • Sandals or flip-flops
  • Water bottle

These items are important and having all of these items could make your pool experience a lot better.

What is the right age to start going to the pool?

Anybody can start to swim! Some parents take their babies to the pool at just a couple of months old. Many swimming facilities run swim classes for babies and their parents, as well as some fun classes to help people gain confidence in the water and learn how to swim.

How deep is the water in the pool?

While not all pools are the same size, the shallow end of a swimming pool is generally 1.20 m deep, reaching 2.5 m at the deep end.

Should you eat before getting into the pool?

It is important to have enough energy for your swim, so you are encouraged to have a healthy snack or a light meal before you get into the pool, although large meals should be avoided.

Check the pool times

If you are new to the water, it was be wise to look up the opening times at your local swimming facility and go to the pool during the less busy hours, as visiting the pool during peak periods can be a stressful experience for novice swimmers.

Choosing your gear

Make sure you aren’t just buying what looks good but what is actually practical. Some swimsuits and trunks from high end brands may look great but could lose their shape or fade after a few swims.

I am scared of the water, what should I do?

Stay within your comfort zone and don’t push yourself too much, it’s important to go at your own pace. Begin by slowly familiarising yourself with the water, even if you just put your hand in. By starting in the shallow end of the pool you can become more familiar with the water without the worry of having deep water below you.
