We love hearing from our Limmys parents. The holiday photos, swimming updates, little milestones and honest feedback give us a glimpse into how our products become part of real family life.
Sophie’s message was one of those lovely updates.
After returning from a family cruise, she got in touch to tell us about her two daughters and their experience swimming with their Limmys Swim Vests.
“Just wanted to say how impressed we’ve been with your vests! Took them away on our recent cruise and they are the best we’ve ever used.”
But it was what happened in the water that made this holiday particularly special.
Two Sisters, Two Very Different Swim Journeys
Sophie’s daughters were at very different stages in the water.
Her eldest could already swim, but wearing her Limmys Swim Vest gave her some extra reassurance while enjoying the pools on holiday and getting ready for the next stage of her swimming lessons.
Her younger sister’s experience had been quite different. She had previously attended swimming lessons but had never felt comfortable enough to kick her legs or attempt to move herself through the water.
On holiday, Sophie started to see that change.
“Seeing this sudden surge of confidence whilst wearing the swim vest was incredible.”
By the end of their trip, her daughter was kicking her legs, moving her arms and making her way through the pool with the biggest smile on her face.
For Sophie, it became one of the highlights of their holiday.
When the First Kick Means Everything
For someone watching from the outside, a child kicking their legs in a swimming pool might seem like a small milestone.
For this family, it was anything but small.
After previous swimming lessons where her youngest daughter hadn’t attempted to kick or move through the water, Sophie was suddenly watching her explore what her body could do.
“By the end of our holiday, she was doing laps on her own, kicking her legs, moving her arms, and most importantly wearing the biggest smile!”
It wasn’t about perfect swimming technique.
She wanted to move. She wanted to explore. Most importantly, she was enjoying being in the water.
Sometimes those seemingly small moments are the ones that mean the most.
A Familiar Part of Pool Time
Something else Sophie noticed surprised her.
Her daughter was happy to put her vest on each time they went swimming.
Sophie felt that the vest had become part of a familiar, positive routine, something her daughter recognised and was happy to put on before getting into the water.
“I think it became a positive visual cue and it looked really comfortable to wear, so she was excited to put it on!”
Instead of the vest becoming something she resisted, it became part of an activity she was beginning to really enjoy.
Two Different Milestones, One Very Happy Mum
One of the loveliest parts of Sophie’s story is seeing what the same holiday meant for each of her daughters.
Her eldest was building on the swimming skills she already had and getting ready for the next stage of lessons.
Her youngest was discovering movement in the water in a way Sophie hadn’t seen before.
As Sophie explained:
“It was lovely to watch both children so happy in the water, one gaining in confidence ready for the next stage of swimming lessons and one gaining independence for the first time in water.”
For Sophie, it meant being able to watch both girls enjoy the pool in their own way.
Swimming milestones don’t always have to be big. Sometimes progress is a new stroke or moving up a level in lessons. Sometimes it is putting your face under the water.
And sometimes, it is that very first kick.
A Little Support, a Lot of Freedom
Swim gear cannot teach a child to swim, and it should never replace qualified swimming instruction or close adult supervision.
What thoughtfully designed swim gear can do is provide support while children spend time in the water and practise their skills.

For Sophie’s youngest daughter, that opportunity to move became particularly meaningful.

She did.
The kicks, the arm movements and those laps around the pool were all hers. The vest was simply there to support her while she discovered what she could do.
A Holiday Memory That Meant a Little More
Family holidays are full of moments we hope we’ll remember.
For Sophie, watching both of her daughters enjoying the water together became one of them.
“It honestly was such a highlight of our trip.”
It wasn’t about reaching a particular swimming milestone by a certain age. It was about two sisters enjoying the same pool in completely different ways.
And both were smiling.
Sophie’s Message to Other Parents
Sophie also had something she wanted to share with other parents who may feel nervous about swimming with their child, particularly when their child needs a little more support.
“It’s hard when you have a child with additional needs who wants to do more than maybe you feel they are able to, but with the right support they absolutely can achieve independence in the water, and what a joy it is to watch that independence and confidence grow!”
Every child’s experience in the water is their own, and what worked for Sophie’s family will not necessarily look the same for another.
But her story is a lovely reminder of what can happen when children are given time, encouragement and the opportunity to discover the water at their own pace.

At the time, none of us could have known that it would eventually be packed into a suitcase for a family cruise, or that Sophie would come home with a story like this one.
